It’s that time of the year for all teachers to start looking at the year ahead. The best way to keep lessons effective, is being organised for every lesson and prepared with different back up options if things don’t always go to schedule. Here are a few points that you need to think about when working on a lesson by lesson schedule
P – PLAN: It’s important that every lesson is planned out thoroughly. You need to think about how long you will need to cover each point and allow time in case the children have any questions. The best way to keep lessons effective and keep the children’s engagement, is by using a variety of techniques to teach. Look at each lesson and decide what you think would be the best way to teach each topic. It might be through a PowerPoint presentation, a practical exercise, class discussion or working through text books. Whichever way you decide, remember to mix things up so that it keeps the children’s attention and isn’t predictable
R – RELAX: During the summer holidays, some teachers might feel stressed because they put extra pressure on themselves to get everything prepared before next term. Don’t forget that the holidays are for you as much as they are for the children. You deserve time to rest and have fun with your family and friends. Of course you need to put time and effort into getting ready for next year but you have 6 weeks to do it. I’m not saying leave everything to the last minute or tell your line manager that your dog ate it, but remember that there’s plenty of time to play and relax. It’s all about balance
E – EXERCISE: Sometimes you can overthink and complicate things if you spend too much time staring at a computer screen, so remember to take breaks so that you can recharge the batteries and exercise as this will release positive endorphins that will wake you up feeling rejuvenated with a new burst of energy. Eat foods that are high in omega 3 fatty acids because this will help you concentrate
P – PRACTICE: The best way to keep lessons effective is by practising what you have created. Whether its in the mirror or with a family member, it will help you to see what flows well and what needs to be tweaked. Be constructive and take on board any feedback that you get. If you do, then it will make a positive difference to the quality and engagement of the lessons which will increase the children’s chances of learning the topics
So there you have it. The best way to keep lessons effective is to plan, relax, exercise, practice and most of all have fun.
